NASP UPDATES BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS GUIDE
February 19, 2000
The National Association of School Psychologists recently released the second edition of "Behavioral Interventions: Creating A Safe Environment in Schools" and has posted it on the web for download. The publication, created by NASP's National Mental Health and Education Center, offers tips and insight into how to handle the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act's new discipline provisions.
The newest version incorporates recent research and digests of scholarly papers on a variety of behavior-related topics. "There is growing recognition among educators, parents and the community that truly effective schools must impart more than the three Rs; they must also attend to children's social and emotional learning," the NASP says in introducing the new guide. "The deliberate teaching of behaviors such as sharing, helping, initiating relationships, requesting help from others and empathy give children the tools they need to optimize their life skills and competencies."
The guide includes articles useful for both parents and educators, such as "A Guide to Emotionally Intelligent Parenting" and discussions of violence prevention strategies and peer mediation. As expected, the publication also advocates parents' and educators' collaboration with school psychologists to implement new strategies or model programs.8
