MINORITY KIDS TAKING LESS RITALIN IN MARYLAND
Across All Races, AD/HD Children Are Undertreated, Studies Say
October 15, 2000
Black and Hispanic children are taking Ritalin and other forms of the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder drug methylphenidate in Maryland public schools at about half the rate of their white counterparts, according to a new study in the September issue of the American Academy of Pediatrics' monthly journal, Pediatrics. Meanwhile, separate surveys from AD/HD drug manufacturer Shire Richwood and the National Mental Health Association indicate the public's low awareness of children's mental health problems in general, including AD/HD, may be a significant factor in the undertreatment of those conditions.
