LEVINE, MIKOL NAMED CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDRENMarch 1, 2004Two people who have worked hard to improve the lives of children with disabilities and their families were recently saluted by Child Magazine's Children's Champions Awards. The awards, the magazine says, celebrate the work of "six men and women who are truly making a difference for the next generation." Mel Levine, M.D., received recognition for his work in the field of learning disabilities. Levine founded All Kinds of Minds, a nonprofit institute at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill that educates teachers, conducts research, and provides resources and information to help kids with learning disabilities. Margaret Mikol founded Sick Kids Need Involved People, a nonprofit organization providing advocacy and service coordination for parents of children in New York state who are chronically ill, medically fragile or developmentally disabled. SKIP guides families through the process of attaining assistance needed to keep their children at home rather than in medical facilities. Others honored include Marian Wright Edleman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund, Andrea Alstrup, founder of the Friendly Programming Forum, Júlio T. Leitão, founder of Batoto Yetu, an African dance troupe for children, and Wendy Kopp, founder of Teach For America.8 |
