NEWS BRIEFHEARING SCREENING PICKS UP STEAM

October 8, 2000

The state of South Carolina joined a growing list of states recently that have either passed legislation or voluntarily decided to provide universal newborn and infant hearing screening, according to the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. Five states -- Arizona, Delaware, Iowa, Montana, and New Mexico -- screen at least 85 percent of their babies for hearing problems. ASHA provides a list of which states participate, as well as contact information for each state, at its web site.8
