"FOX AND CROW" FABLE HELPS KIDS WITH HEARING DISABILITIES LEARN TO READ
From the National Center for Accessible Media's Cornerstones program
TV, computers and printed classroom materials combine in a new literacy program from PBS that starts with "The Fox and the Crow" and will be followed in June by two other lesson packages. Designed for inclusive classrooms, the Cornerstones program gives teachers tools to help children with hearing disabilities improve reading, writing and comprehension.

STUDENTS LEARN:
- definitions, examples and variations of 27 target words
- basic story elements: characters, setting, problem, solution, outcome and theme
IMPLEMENTING THE PLAN:
- Download Cornerstones Lesson Guide and choose a version of "The Fox and the Crow" to use in class -- printable storybook, animated video clip with ASL interpreting, two different web page formatted stories or a videotape. Teachers use these materials to help students with initial reading of the story.
- Download or print from the Cornerstones web site activity materials to teach vocabulary, word usage and story structure in six progressive lessons. Each can employ any combination of worksheets, games and reading and writing activities based on the students' varied learning levels and interests.
