SCHWAB FOUNDATION ADDS GUIDANCE IN SPANISHOctober 15, 1999The Schwab Foundation for Learning launched a Spanish-language version of its Intenet site this week to help Spanish-speaking parents get find information on learning disabilities. The move puts Schwab among only a handful of Spanish-language sites for special education. The foundation was The Schwab Foundation for Learning is a nonprofit organization established by financier Charles Schwab and his wife, Helen O'Neill Schwab. Schwab's Spanish-language pages adhere to the same goal as the English version, primarily providing background on various special ed. issues and information about Schwab's services. The site also lists web links and phone numbers for other Spanish-language special ed. resources. The Spanish section includes information sheets on assessment, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, dyslexia and other learning disabilities. It also provides guides for parents to follow when choosing a tutor, having their children assessed, seeking a professional evaluation of AD/HD, or selecting a speech and language therapist. Schwab also put its Bridges to Reading guidebook on the Spanish site, giving parents various strategies for recognizing reading problems. The publication includes information on reading problems, steps parents can take to encourage their children to learn to read and answers to common questions about the ways children learn. Other Spanish-language Internet sites for special education include Necesidades Educativas Especiales, a web portal featuring information on special ed., event listings, and links to other Spanish-language support services and schools, and the Centro de Diagnóstico para Niños con Problemas de Aprendizaje, Inc., a site directing parents and educators toward further resources for diagnosing and addressing learning difficulties. In addition, the U.S. Department of Education offers various information and services in Spanish or for Spanish-speakers, though how much information is available on special education is unclear.8 |
