NEWS BRIEFAOL TO MAKE BROWSER BLIND ACCESSIBLE

July 26, 2000

The National Federation of the Blind won a legal settlement from America Online Inc. to ensure the nation's top Internet service provider makes its next browsing software release compatible with screen readers that assist blind and visually impaired Web surfers. The NFB had sued AOL in a federal court in Boston, charging the inaccessible service violated the Americans with Disabilities Act, but the federation withdrew the complaint when AOL agreed to correct the flaw in its next edition. The new version is due for release this fall.8
