SUPER SCHOOL SOFTWARE POSTS SPECIAL ED. GRANT DETAILS

November 20, 1999

Super School Software posted its new grant application information for teachers and schools looking for help managing special education classrooms. The company's JB Barber Technology in Education Grant series features several different types of software grants for both general and special ed. teachers, supplying up to $8,000 in software and other materials in exchange for teacher feedback on the products. The special education grant is designed to allow special ed. teachers, speech language specialists, school psychologists, school principals and special education administrators to explore the use of new computerized assessment tools, informal screening tests, portfolio assessment software, computer-based teacher productivity tools and computer programs to write individualized education plans.

"It is our goal to demonstrate that, through the use of [those] teacher and student productivity tools, special education instructors and their administrators will be able to show growth in student performance," the company says.

In addition to helping teachers, the software used in the grant program can help students and parents take advantage of computers to learn more efficiently and effectively, the company says. All grant programs supply students with personal diary software, "My Secret PC Diary," to use at home and school. For students who do not have a computer at home, the program supplies them with the company's "I'm A Happy Writer Paper and Pencil Portfolio." Parents and teachers are encouraged to collaborate on implementation of the program. Parents get Super School software programs that enable them to communicate regularly with their children's teachers and schools.

SOFTWARE GRANTS COULD MAKE SPECIAL ED TEACHERS' LIVES EASIER

To apply for the grants, teachers must submit proposals meeting some basic criteria. Once they receive the grants, teachers also have to follow a few guidelines, such as actively using the materials with their students and providing a summary report, using Super School's report writer program, to describe how the project is progressing. In addition, teachers must provide a video sample of the products in use and write a press release announcing the implementation of the JB Barber program to their school districts and community newspapers.

Super School will evaluate student work every quarter for two years using disks of data the teachers submit. The teachers must also provide feedback to Super School's researchers when asked and must be willing to let other interested parties examine their programs and research findings, to help other schools implement similar programs.

Super School Software is comprised of a group of teachers, researchers and software developers with the single focus of making life easier for teachers. The group introduced its first collaborative product, the "Teacher Tools Success Pak" in September. It is available through educational supply catalogs.8
