TOSHIBA WANTS TEACHERS TO COMPUTEJuly 26, 1999Toshiba America's Computer Systems Division is putting two new lines of computers on sale to attract teachers and students preparing to return to the classroom. The company is promoting a new plan to offer notebook and desktop PCs and software bundled as products specifically designed for education. The company's Satellite notebook line and its Equium desktops include modems, large hard drives and CD-ROM drives standard. Notebooks start at $1,399, and desktops start at $969. Through Toshiba's new alliance with software retailer Chumbo.com, the computers also come with programs designed for K-12 students and teachers. For teachers, the Notebooks for Schools program offers computers with Microsoft Office and a set of programs Toshiba says are "designed to significantly enhance the integration of technology in the classroom." Additional software is available at discounts from Toshiba and Chumbo's new Educhoice Software Program -- www.educhoice.com. For students, Toshiba also offers online tutoring at Homeworkhelp.com. At that site, The Super Tutor Company offers middle and high school students and teachers more than 1,800 tutorials, lessons, animations and videos.8 |
