CLD PRESIDENT JOINS TUTORNET BOARD

Council for Learning Disabilities President Julie Jochum was named Tuesday to a new International Educational Advisory Board for Tutornet.com. Jochum is professor of special education at Bemidji State University, in Bemidji, Minn. The Council for Learning Disabilities, at coe.winthrop.edu/cld/, promotes the education of individuals with specific learning disabilities by improving teacher preparation programs and local special education programs.

Tutornet.com is one of a growing number of online education resources for K-12 students. The company provides live, teacher-moderated tutoring over the Internet, including subject-oriented assistance from experienced teachers and tutors. Jochum joins 11 other education professionals and executives, including Dr. Starla Jewell-Kelly, executive director of the National Community Education Association, Dr. Joseph Newlin, executive director of the National Rural Education Association, and Dr. David Weidner, director of information technologies for the American Association of School Administrators. Board members bring experience from a wide range of academic backgrounds, including both urban and rural rural, traditional and distance learning classrooms and administrative and teaching positions.

The board is charged with providing strategic guidance for Tutornet as it tries to expand its services to reach as many students as possible. The group will help make sure Tutornet's services meet national and state regulations as well as curriculum standards. Tutornet also plans to consult the board as it develops test preparation services and other ways to increase student achievement. The board will also advise Tutornet on strategic partnerships in the public and private sector.8
