NEWS BRIEFMENTORING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES GOES NATIONAL

Oct. 8, 2000

The Oct. 25 National Disability Mentoring Day, part of Disability Employment Awareness Month, has attracted more than 100 companies and organizations around the country to help young people with disabilities find and keep jobs. The project started with the first mentoring day last fall, held mostly by federal government agencies, but the White House, the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, the Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities and the American Association of People with Disabilities are trying to expand the annual event across the country. "Disability Mentoring Day is an opportunity to help people with disabilities in thinking about career opportunities, and to educate the general public about the potential of a massive resource for sustaining our national well being," White House Associate Director for Disability Outreach Jonathan Young said.8
