NEWS BRIEFMARRIOTT HONORS BRIDGE BUILDERS

The Marriott Foundation for People with Disabilities recently announced honorees in three cities in its "Bridges ... from school to work'' program. Founded in 1989, the Bridges program has placed 4,500 youth in internships with more than 1,200 companies. After completing the program, 89 percent of the students have continued their employment. In Atlanta, Marriott honored Marshalls clothing store manager Isabella Williams with its Leadership Award, the Little Faces Learning Center with its Small Business Award, the Georgia Department of Labor as its Employer of the Year, and student Dorothy Lester, an employee at Crawford Long Hospital, with its Youth Achievement Award.

Edward Harris, of the California State Automobile Association, won the Leadership Award in San Francisco, while J&J True Value Hardware earned the Small Business Award, and accounting firm Deloitte & Touche was named Employer of the Year. The Youth Achievement Award went to Gerald Lee, who works for AMC Theaters. In Los Angeles, State Compensation Insurance Fund Equal Opportunity Employer Coordinator Angie Lim received the Leadership Award, event management firm Contemporary Services Corp. was named Employer of the Year, and Lisa Burchette, senior loss prevention officer at the Torrance Marriott Hotel, won the Youth Achievement Award.8
