NEWS BRIEFFAMILY OPPORTUNITY ACT STILL ALIVE ON HILL

Oct. 26, 2000

The Family Opportunity Act of 2000 that has won nominal support in Congress but has yet to make it to the President's desk still has a chance of passing before Congress adjourns for the year, according to the Council for Exceptional Children, one of special ed's top lobbying groups. The Family Opportunity Act, backed by Sens. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), would give families of children with disabilities access to Medicaid coverage for school-based services, even if the families do not financially qualify for Medicaid. The CEC is urging members of the special ed community to call members of Congress, particularly three who could swing the decision: Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), House Commerce Committee Chairman Thomas Bliley (R-Va.) and House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chairman William Thomas (R-Calif.).8
